What’s better than a bag of microwaved popcorn for a movie night? Well, turns out, just about anything is better than that stuff. We all know that plain popcorn is a pretty healthy whole grain snack. However, the popular microwave kind is filled with artificial flavours, dyes, carcinogenic chemical compounds, modified ingredients, acids and preservatives. You’re getting a lot more than you probably bargained for when popping a bag of that stuff. And speaking of the bag itself, apparently it’s lined with perfluorooctanoic acid, which is a toxic chemical that, when heated, has been linked with infertility, cancer, and other diseases in lab animals. The best thing about this simple method is that you can, of course, modify it to your liking by adding whatever topping to your popcorn that you may wish. I like a cheesy buttery flavor on my popcorn and I was able to achieve that with only 2 tsp of melted butter, and a tbsp of my dad’s homemade Parmesan cheese. I’m sure that’s way better than the unnatural and unnecessary extra stuff that’s in a commercial bag.
If you wanted, you could top your popcorn with garlic butter, cinnamon, other spices, lime juice, lemon juice, honey, chocolate sauce, caramel, or even just leave it plan. You decide. And that’s the beauty of it. The possibilities are almost endless. But this method is so simple and so cost effective that you can play around with it to your heart’s content. All the while, enjoying a healthy, whole grain snack.
